How did I came to doing a PhD? And why at the IDS? And why BRMS? This is the topic of this post. So I will tell the whole story now, for you hords of curious fans :D
I worked at SAP headquarters in Rot-Malsch (just a train station before Walldorf, 40 minutes in train from Karlsruhe) as a student in the Business Process Modelling team for almost a year. As part of my tasks I had to model and develop using the ARIS Framework from the IDS Scheer. I came into contact with consultants from the IDS.
At the same time I was working on my master Thesis at the FZI at the university of karlsruhe, where I was doing my double degree in computer science (with the ENSIMAG-INPG in Grenoble, France). My master thesis topic was about policy-based collaboration in semanic business process management. I had already decided some time before that I definitely wanted to work in reasearch and do a PhD. As I am of a very communicative nature, I had told almost everybody in the company (and that makes a lot of people :-)) about what I was doing and that I was looking for a PhD position to continue working around semantic BPM.
Through one of the consultants who was in contact with an IDS engineer who already was doing his PhD at the IDS, I doscovered that the IDS also had a research division and even a PhD program. Since the IDS offered what I needed for my PhD Project, I decided to jump on the opportunity and sent my application through my contact. I was contacted by email and after some phone interviews (which I was used to since I have had numerous professional experiences previously, I also had many interviews with french companies, at a time where I thought I would go back to work in France...) and a few other interviews at the IDS headquarters (also with my current supervising professor), I received a contract proposal in Karlsruhe in february. I signed immediately and sent it by post the following day.
I still had to finish my master thesis, to get my marks from my french engineering school validated and converted at the faculty of computer science (which took some time...). After all administrative difficulties at the university were overcome, I had to apply for a work permit in Karlsrueh and wait. Thanks to my IDS superior's insistance , the procedure was highly accelerated and I got my work permit at the beginning of june. I started immediately. I had already moved to saarbrücken in May.
I said goodbye to Karlsruhe and closed one chapter more of my dislocations in European countries and a prolongation of my stay in Germany of at least 3 years :D
We'll see how it goes here, and if I get along well with the city and life here in saarbrücken. Hope for the best.

Veosearch
Today I want to talk to you about Veosearch, the first search engine I know about that works with an innovative concept: supporting sustainable development projetcs by using advertisement revenue to sponsor such projects.
Veosearch can be found here: http://www.veosearch.com/. It is a french project. Currently the website is till in french, we all know the love of our french neighbours for foreign languages. There is no indication yet as to whether the project is destined to be available in different languages.
Technically said, veosearch is a multi-search-engine, it agregates the results returned by numerous search engines, such as yahoo, google, exalead and ask.com. the most important about veosearch is that it is a solidary web search engine. It gathers money for associations conducting sustainable devlopment projects aroud these three topics: Humans, Environment and sustainable ecnomical activities. If you want moreinformation about Veosearch, have a look at the blog of the project: http://blog.veosearch.com/. For the time being it is still in french so... but we'll be patient and wait for a translation!
Just putting is as your default search engine will help gather money each time you access a page through your search. So get involved!

About this blog
My name is Marwane El Kharbili and this is my PhD blog. I am currently doing my PhD at the IDS Scheer AG (ARIS Research) in Saarbrücken, germany and at the University of Osnabrück.
On this page I will try to document the progress of my PhD. I would also like to use this blog as a collaboration platform and alternative publication channel for the many ideas that one has to deal with and encounters while meeting so many people working on so many different topics. Discussion and collaboration are noticeable imperatives of any work, but it certainly doesn't get more critical as in scientific work.
My Topics of interest are of course Business Process Management (BPM), Business Rule Management Systems (BRMS), Governance, Risk and Compliance Management and Semantic technologies. About this Blog...Again
I started this a little bit late, since I am at the IDS since already 5 Months. But as I am convinced of the interest of managing such a blog, I will maintain this blog throughout my PhD. The documentation and communication potential of keeping such a virtual notebook are immense and wasn't it the high amount of tasks and challenges one has to face when starting his professional career, I'd have been doing this since a long time ago (I already hear the Blog-wolves laughing and thinking "Well, you'll have even less time when you get olderbuddy" :D).
One of the things that always kept me reminded that I'd eventually have to start my own PhD blog, is that it seems that today, everybody has his own PhD blog, starting with Sebastian, my colleague here at IDS and fellow PhD student. If you look at how often people in the IT branch have blogs, and the quality of content some of them produce on these blogs, one is astonished. It is certainly a high cost to produce such quality, and PhD students are not well placed in terms of time availability :D
I am one of those guys who somehow alwayws have 1000 projects and find it very hard to bring each one them to the end...well almost ;-) So I thought this should not also happen with my PhD Blog project and decided to get started just today. But I have learned through years to optimize my energy...I still need to work on my prioritization of tasks, which sometimes gives the impression that I am not well organized, but when people have a look at the amount of things I have to deal with in my mind, they understand that one sometimes has organization problems. As far as the PhD is concerned, Organization of time, of tasks and an intelligent prioritization are an absolute necessity. And on the contrary to what many people think, there are lots of software tools which can really help, if one knows which ones to use and how to use them. I will often deal with organization and work methods here in this blog, since this I have always been trying to optimize.
So, this blog is not a premature infant, it is destined to deal with business and scientific topics, most of them research related. But I will also try to present what a postgraduate dissertation in an industrial context really looks like, and why one should or should not opt for it. Organization and work methods are also a great topic of interest to me, so don't hesitate to let me know if you have interesting things to tell about it. For now, the slot I reserved for writing this post is over, I'll get on with the next task for today :D
